GTx, Inc. Initiates Urology Resident Research Fellowship Program

MEMPHIS, Tenn., April 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/— GTx, Inc. (Nasdaq: GTXI), a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of therapeutics primarily related to the treatment of serious men's health conditions, today announced its Urology Resident Research Fellowship program in partnership with the Department of Urology, University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

The GTx Urology Resident Research Fellowship provides Urology residents from the University of Tennessee (UT) the opportunity to experience a research rotation at the GTx research laboratories. UT Urology residents will participate in cutting-edge basic and clinical research projects as well as clinical trials, which will ultimately result in scientific papers and presentations at a major Urology meeting. GTx recognizes the value in exposing these residents to over 20 scientists and clinicians in over 15,000 square feet of research labs at GTx. The Urology residents could help to advance the development of drugs to treat serious men's health diseases in the very same patients that they will one day be treating in their practices.

"Exposure to urological research is critical to the education of a well-rounded urologist and ultimately to his or her patients. GTx is happy to be able to have this program to help support the Department of Urology at the University of Tennessee," said Mitchell Steiner, M.D., CEO of GTx, Inc. Robert W. Wake, M.D., Associate Professor and interim Chair in the Department of Urology at the University of Tennessee applauded the fellowship by noting, "We are very pleased to have an opportunity for residents to work with a local biotech company focusing on men's health. This program affords a tremendous benefit to their education and thus far has been well received by the residents. In a time when funding in urology is hard to find, it is wonderful to have an avenue such as the GTx Urology Resident Research Fellowship to complete the education process."

The company is currently conducting clinical trials on ACAPODENE™ (Toremifene Citrate) tablets, its most advanced product candidate, for two separate indications: (1) a Phase IIb clinical trial to assess the effect of toremifene in the reduction in the incidence of prostate cancer in men with precancerous prostate lesions and (2) a pivotal Phase III clinical trial to assess the effect of toremifene in the treatment of serious side effects of advanced prostate cancer therapy. GTx is initially developing its second product candidate, andarine, for the treatment of muscle wasting weight loss, or cachexia, which occurs from various types of cancer and other chronic diseases.
